A recent report of MusicBusiness China summarized the 2017 capital raising activities in China music and entertainment industry. According to the report, there were 76 capital raising activities for 73 companies in 2017, an increase of 28.8% as compared to previous year.
Rounds of Capital Raising: 75% (57 companies) of the capital raising activities in 2017 are for early rounds (seed, angel, Pre-A and A round).
Amount of Capital Raising: During 2017, except for companies that have not disclosed the amount, 6 companies raised over RMB 100 million, and 29 companies raised over RMB 10 million. Among them, Pearl River Piano (珠江琴行) raised RMB 1.09 billion in Aug 2017, and Music of NetEase (网易云音乐) raised RMB 750 million in Apr 2017. Also, Star48 culture media group (丝芭传媒) and 火星数娱raised over RMB 100 million. In addition, one of the China’s top news aggregator service companies, Jinri Toutiao (今日头条) acquired Musical.ly for about USD 1 billion to expand its global reach in Nov 2017.
Overall, music education is still one of the hottest investment areas in music and entertainment industry in 2017.
